Drawn-Over-Mandrel (DOM), Electric Resistance Welded (ERW)
In line with our reputation as a world supplier of tubing, at Salem Steel NA, LLC our mills manufacture high quality electric resistance welded tubing (ERW), which is further worked to produce drawn over mandrel (DOM) tubing for a range of industries and demanding applications. Our DOM tubing is created from flat sheets of raw material, rolled on a weld mill to produce mother hollow. A number of material options are available, including AISI class 1008, 1010, 1020, and 1026. The material is subjected to a normalizing heat treatment to produce suitable tube for cold working. Overhead cranes are employed to submerge parts into tanks for further processing including sulfuric acid cleaning, cold rinsing, and a lubrication bath to prevent material scratching and breaking during forming.
Our highly developed cold work drawing process uses a carbide die and mandrel to evenly reduce the I.D., O.D., and wall thicknesses, followed by a stress relieving process. The resultant DOM tubing possesses high dimensional accuracy and enhanced mechanical properties. Extremely straight tubes are generated with rotary straightening, and deburring is performed for smoothness and cleanliness. Parts are also treated with rust preventative coating. Tubes are cut to length, with approximately 1" - 2" removed from each end to achieve a 90° square cut. All DOM tubing is comprehensively tested and inspected with numerous procedures to ensure accuracy and integrity most notably Eddy Current testing methods to confirm no cracking, holes, splits, splintering, or chatter; 100% dimensional testing for ID, OD, and wall thicknesses; straightness testing; and cosmetic quality checks to rule out rust, dirt, and grease marring. Total pieces and footage per bundle is also verified. All tubes are precision stenciled, if required, with material type, producing mill, size, and heat number along with customer required information. Products are available in custom and irregular sizes and specialized finishes, according to customer specifications.
