Salem Steel NA is an industry leading supplier of premium quality tubing and bar, used for hydraulic cylinder application. After cold drawing and heat treating, our cylinder tubes will have the ID’s honed or skived and roller burnished (SRB) depending on your preference. Suitable to hone or SRB are also available with tolerances and guaranteed cleanup to be negotiated, depending on your requirements. We only work with ISO certified mills who undergoe a thorough audit by Salem's quality manager. These mills processing and inspections meet or exceed the U.S. standards.
Honing
Under the honing process, abrasive stones and paper are applied to the ID of the tube which “grinds” stock away to remove surface imperfections from the mill drawing process and to achieve the desired dimensional tolerances and surface finish. Utilizing the honing process, Salem Steel can offer tubing to ID dimensional tolerances as tight as .001”, and surface finish as smooth as 4-8 µin Ra. Tubing is available to meet various mechanical property requirements, as well as Charpy Impact properties 27 J (20 ft-lbs) @ -20ºC.

Skived and Roller Burnishing (SRB)
The SRB process is a single pass operation that uses a cutting tool on the forward stroke, to machine to size, and uses roller bearings on the reverse stroke, to burnish the surface. Skiving and roller burnishing is faster than honing and typically yields tighter tolerances and surface finish control than honing.

Chrome Plated Bar
The complementary product to the cylinder barrel is the piston rod. Salem offers Chrome plated bar for this application. Our bar stock is available in TGP, Chrome Plated, and induction hardened conditions. Induction Hardened Chrome plated bar is available in sizes from 0.629-11.811”. 50 RC minimum hardness at 0.050” depth (shallow case = .030” and heavy case = .070” available). Our mills start the process by peeling a raw carbon or alloy bar, straightening and then hardening the material. Then the bars are cut, ground, and straightened until they are ready to be polished. After the preliminary polishing the bars are chrome plated and then polished to a final surface finish of 8 µin Ra or as required. In addition to chrome plated bar, chrome plated OD tubing (hollow rod) is also available.
Our suppliers conduct a Neutral Salt Spray test per ASTM B117 to check that the Rating is a 7-10 @ 120 hours.
